Good morning, Medford, Tuesday, May 5
Happy Tuesday, everybody. Did somebody say Cinco de Mayo?
Welcome to Cinco de Mayo! The fifth of May is a day set aside in the U.S. to celebrate Mexican food, music, and dance. We think of margaritas, burritos, and tacos. And, Medford has a number of Mexican restaurants, including, in no particular order:
- Cilantro's Mexican Grill on Riverside Avenue
- Plazita Mexico Tacos on High Street
- Tenoch Mexican on Riverside Avenue
- Qdoba on the Fellsway
- Picante Taqueria on Boston Avenue
- El Tacuba on Salem Street
- Chipotle on the Fellsway
- El Vaquero Mexican Taqueria on High Street
By the way, According to History.com, Cinco de Mayo is not a major holiday in Mexico: "Cinco de Mayo, meaning 'the fifth of May,' is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862, victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War."
However you celebrate today, enjoy.
In that vein, here is another reason to celebrate. Three Medford High School students were honored during an April awards ceremony at Malden High School for works they submitted for the Immigrant Learning Center's annual Teen Perspectives Art & Essay Contest. The theme for this year's contest was “How My Community Benefits from Immigration,” and students from Medford, Malden, and Everett were invited to submit entries.
Griffin Lynch-Wood won second place for his work "Beneath the Same Light." Reza Basnet won second place in the essay contest for a piece titled, "Our Way," and Valentina Burke took third place for an essay titled, "Knots of Belonging.

Visit www.ilctr.org to see Lynch-Wood's artist statement, Basnet and Burke's essays, and the submissions of all the participating students.
