Good morning, Medford, Thursday, May 7
All of us at GKM hope you're morning is off to a great start, and if you're just getting home from work, we hope you have a restful morning. We have an important announcement from the city, plus a did-you-know and 'all the happenings fit to post.'
The saying goes, "April showers bring May flowers," but May itself is shaping up to be quite showery. We're looking at the possibility of rain on Saturday and then Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week. So, what do May showers bring? Perhaps that old saying needs an update.
Today, we have an announcement from the city and an event to put on the radar for Saturday.
The city announced yesterday that alcohol compliance checks will be done twice each year to ensure licensed establishments are not selling alcohol to people under the age of 21. Underage operatives will be assisting in the effort.
The Medford Office of Prevention and Outreach will be working with the Police Department and the Licensing Commission to conduct the compliance checks using guidelines issued by the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.
According to the announcement posted to the city's website, "As part of the initiative, supervised underage operatives will attempt to purchase alcohol at licensed establishments. These individuals do not misrepresent their age, do not carry false identification, and follow strict protocols to ensure that the checks are conducted fairly and without entrapment."
Questions are being directed to the Office of Prevention and Outreach at 781-393-2449.
This Saturday, there will be an event to celebrate disability pride and culture. The Medford Commission for Persons with Disabilities is teaming up with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to host "disABILITY Fair" at the McGlynn School from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be an inclusive dance with Dance Latin Boston, a performance by DEAFinitely INC, vendors, and a decorating station where you can "Glitz up your glasses. Wow your wheelchair or walker. Ornament your orthotics." And, free ice cream.

Did you know?
Kitty Connection, which is based in Medford, does not hold adoption events. It operates differently than many other cat and dog rescue organizations in that it is a network of foster homes. Animals are adopted out from those foster homes. In addition, the organization runs courtesy posts on its site. These are animals that are not in the care of Kitty Connection but who need a home, so the organization posts the information as a courtesy.
For example, Jamie and PQ, pictured above, are a bonded pair of 5-year-old brown-tabby sisters who lost their home when their person went into hospice care. Kitty Connection is running their story as a courtesy to help find them a new home. Click here to read more and see a video.
In case you missed it
Members of the City Council are asking questions about how to get legal advice given that Medford has no city solicitor at the moment. Chris wrote about where things stand.
