The first of what could amount to three storms this week passed through over weekend, dumping several inches in the area.

Medford saw about 6.4 inches of snow fall from Feb. 8 to Feb. 9, according to the National Weather Service.

“It was a relatively easy storm to manage,” said Department of Public Works Deputy Commissioner Scott Brinch. “Especially because it got warm the next day.”

Brinch said the city was prepared for the storm, having crews report around 9 p.m. on Feb. 8 to prepare the plows. Roads were also pre-treated with salt and sand, he added, and contractors were assigned to their routes.

Brinch said the cleanup wrapped around 1 o’clock on Sunday. He said crews finished with parking lots and other smaller streets that might not have gotten enough attention the first time around.

“It was nothing unusual,” he said.

Brinch said Medford residents were also really good about getting vehicles off the streets, but police were out ticketing and towing the stragglers.

“We really tried to do that in advance,” Brinch said, referring to the snow emergency declared about 24 hours before the storm was about to start. “That really helped people find alternate parking spaces.”

More snow

The snow could start again early Thursday morning and last throughout the afternoon. Forecasters say the storm could start out with snow and change into rain and ice.

A third storm could start late Feb. 15 and possibly run through the entire weekend into early Monday, Feb. 17 in time for Presidents Day.

Brinch said he’s heard the Thursday storm could be another 3 to 4 inches, but isn’t sure at the moment if the city needs another parking ban. He said it depends on the amount of snowfall.
